Tires aren’t the only
thing that’s burning in Haiti. Riots, roadblocks, and civil unrest are in full
swing. Why though? Inflation has soared and because of it, Haitian President
Moise and Prime Minister Jean-Henry Céant are accused
of corruption and asked to step down. In July of 2018 a fuel tax was passed
which essentially caused fuel prices to skyrocket. There are riots in the
streets and state university hospitals without medicine. Canada evacuated over
100 of its citizens who were on vacation. The US sent additional marines to the
US embassy and imposed a level 4 “Do Not Travel” on Haiti. This was because of
a "limited ability to provide emergency services." The article also mentioned
the US response to Haiti, and basically they urged dialog between the Haitian government
and it’s people. "Genuine
dialogue and compromise, leading to a transparent and accountable government,
can best serve the needs and aspirations of the Haitian people" (Sanchez
2019). I sense big things are on the horizon for Haiti. Riot police have murdered
some protesters, but it’s unclear who and how many have been killed. People will
not stay oppressed like this for long, I suspect big things are in the works
for Haiti. //
