Mohammad Javad Zarif: Iran's foreign minister anounces resignation
Posted by Olivia Acanfora
Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, recently unexpectedly announced his resignation through his Instagram. Zarif was educated in the U.S. and has a PhD in international law from the University of Denver. Prior to becoming foreign minister in 2013, Zarif was Iran's UN ambassador. He became foreign minister at the same time president Hassan Rouhani was elected, when the president promised a more moderate and outward facing Iran. Zarif spearheaded the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran , the UK, France, China, Russia, Germany, and the U.S. Trump has declared the deal to be insufficient to curb Iranian nuclear activity and has announced leaving the agreement. Since then, Zarif was working to keep the deal alive. In his absence it will be interesting to see if the deal is upheld by Iran.
