Since recognizing Juan Guaido as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela, the US has prepared and sent humanitarian aid to Columbia, with hopes of getting it into Venezuela. The US government has announced that they will be sending another large shipment of aid using military aircraft to deliver it to Columbia. This is the first time the US has used the military to deliver assistance to Venezuela. This continues to be a bold move, as the Venezuelan military still supports Nicolas Maduro, who has refused to let any aid enter the country. Guaido has, however, vowed that he will deliver the aid.
Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has said that, as US pressure on the country is increasing, Maduro has begun to realize that Venezuelans reject him as their president. Maduro has said that he would be willing to meet with President Trump to resolve the issue of US recognition of Guaido as president.
It will be interesting to see if the US uses the possibility of a meeting as leverage for Maduro letting US aid into the country.
