Constitutional Change Could Extend Egyptian President’s Rule
By: Reagan Quynn
Earlier this month, constitutional changes were drafted and approved by Egypt’s parliament, which could extend President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi’s rule by another twelve years, until 2034. Sisi’s current four year term expires in 2022, but the constitutional changes could allow him to remain in office for another two terms of six years each. Supporters of the change argue a longer term will allow Sisi to continue working on and possibly finish economic reform and other development projects, but critics, including human rights groups, worry it is merely an “authoritarian power-grab.”
