Top US general begins farewell tour amid orders to withdraw from Syria, Afghanistan

General Joseph Votel will be stepping down after serving the US for forty years. He is currently the top US Commander for the Middle East and Asia, and took that position under President Obama. He was mainly tasked with coming up with and carrying out solutions for the war on ISIS. Now with the order to evacuate troops from Syria under President Trump, he has decided to retire. The general has shared that he was not "consulted" when the president decided to remove the troops, but he has maintained that the original mission has not changed. On his farewell tour he will be visiting with several foreign leaders thanking them for their cooperation and support of the US military overseas. Over his nearly forty year career he has seen a lot of combat and has been on some of the most secretive operations. He has supposedly been able to develop many allies over the course of his career, and some worry that after he's gone the younger generals will have trouble filling his shoes. His farewell tour will last two weeks.
