President Biden has told the Turkish President Erdogan that he is planning to recognize the Ottoman Empire's slaughtering of Armenians during the first world war as a genocide. The Republic of Turkey has tried to hush governments around the world from labeling it a genocide and has used it political power to do so, with former Presidents Obama and Trump never calling it a genocide. Turkey is a key country in the middle east, the largest NATO military power in the region and is a power equal to Iran and Saudi Arabia in terms of influence and size. Recognizing the Armenian genocide while a moral choice also does strain US-Turkish relations and will hamper relations going forward. There will not be any legal consequences nor will Turkey recognize it as a genocide but the political fallout might impact Middle Eastern policy for years.
