India just overtook Brazil as the second-worst hit country in the pandemic, recording over 160,000 new cases in a 24 hour period on monday. Health officials in India have cited a relaxing of social distancing and masking as the reason for the outbreak, as several large-scale political and religious gatherings have taken place in the country in recent weeks. This new wave has led India to halt the export of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the COVID treatment drug Remdesivir in the face of vaccine shortages and increased demand for COVID treatment within the country.
