What's behind the recent violence in Northern Ireland?

CNN reported on the ongoing violence in Northern Ireland and what is causing uprisings/riots. At least 74 officers have been injured as individuals have thrown objects such as manhole covers and fireworks at them. These escalating threats are feared to undermine the relationship between pro-British loyalists who want to continue to be part of the UK and pro-Irish nationalists who want to be more like the Republic of Ireland. The most recent “flareup” began on March 29 when police officers were targeted in a petrol bomb attack and April 2 when police were attacked again, leaving many officers with burns and head/leg injures. The violence has increased significantly since Easter weekend and Brexit remains to be the main cause for these riots. Protests are expected to occur in areas such as Derry/Londonderry, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Newtonabbey, and Belfast next Saturday, which is the 23rd anniversary of the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement.
