Ecuador's Guillermo Lasso Wins Presidential Election

Ecuador elected a conservative former banker and supporter of free market policies as president over his populist opponent. Guillermo Lasso received over 52% of the vote to win the presidency. Lasso will encounter the issues of a "bruised economy" and the Covid-19 pandemic that is hitting South America hard with surging infection levels. However, in Peru the presidential voting is appearing to go to the far left. They have voted in favor of presidential candidate Pedro Castillo, a socialist who is "undoing three decades of market-friendly policies."

We are currently discussing in class how individuals play a role in Globalization. I foresee that the election of Lasso may impact Ecuador's economic situation, but possibly their influence on Globalization in the International System. Moreover, it is fascinating to see the influence of the people on who they are choosing to elect. Especially since Lasso is considered conservative and a supporter of free market policies which align nicely with the United States. It will be fascinating to see how Lasso handles Ecuador's economy and the Covid-19 pandemic. As well as who is elected in Peru.
