Myanmar Protesters Return After Security Forces Kill at Least 90 People

This is a particular event in international news that I have been following for quite a while now. Myanmar was “on a decade long shift towards democracy” that has ended abruptly by absolute military rule (Mandhana). There have been large amounts of protests against this military rule, but the military seems to not care a single bit about the people’s opinions or even lives as mass destruction has occurred. There have already been over 420 confirmed lives lost in a two month period as the military has been opening fire on the civilians countless times. “The U.S., U.K., Germany, Australia and Japan, issued a statement against the use of lethal force against unarmed civilians. “We urge the Myanmar Armed Forces to cease violence and work to restore respect and credibility with the people of Myanmar that it has lost through its actions”, but it seems way to late for that (Mandhana). As horrible as the situation is, it is interesting to see how other world powers are responding to the situation, and what they are legally able to do. Also, it is a reminder to appreciate the fact that I am a U.S. citizen and that I have a legal right to protest against my government. Comparing the recent protests in the U.S. with these ones in Myanmar truly displays just how messed up some governments are.
