The Washington Post reported on Biden’s goal to remove all US troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. 9/11 was one of the first attacks that brought the United States into a war with Afghanistan and Biden is expected to announce its end on Wednesday. Currently, there are 2,500 US troops in Afghanistan, but most likely 1,000 more than that and 7,000 foreign forces (mainly NATO). The Biden Administration has mentioned concerns about removing troops too soon in fears of the collapse, political difficulties at home, and renewed attacks. Many individuals in NATO and US lawmakers have warned about early departure, stating, “a swift pullout would be ‘challenging’ and ‘destabilizing.”’ At this point in history, it appears most of the population and the government believe we have done everything possible.
