Landslides and flooding caused by torrential rainfall killed 41 people and displaced whole villages last night in eastern Indonesia. The region has been increasingly hard-hit by natural disasters this year, ranging from floods, to earthquakes, to volcanic eruptions. It's unclear to what degree these disasters can be directly attributed to climate change, but it is well-known that climate change does exacerbate existing natural disasters, so what's going in Indonesia this year should serve as a wake-up call to the entire world; unless we start taking serious steps to mitigate climate change, the scope and number of natural disasters Indonesia has experienced this year might be emblematic of our future.
