Ailworth
and Barrett examine a trial that most of the U.S. is keeping its eye on as
Derek Chauvin is being prosecuted for the murder of George Floyd. This event
has been in the news nonstop for the past several months, but as the trial has
actually recently begun, new information is beginning to come out. This article
talks about the testimony of Medaria Arradondo, the Minneapolis Police
Department Chief. In his testimony, Arradondo states that Officer Chauvin
violated several different regulations with the way he handled the situation
with George Floyd and that he did not act the way the academy taught him to.
Furthermore, he states that the counterfeit twenty dollar bill, which Floyd was
being arrested for, is not enough reason to arrest someone or to go to the
extents he did. This testimony is huge for the prosecution of George Floyd
because the defense has been basing most of its rationale on the belief that
Derek Chauvin was simply doing what he was supposed to as a police officer.
Arradondo makes it clear that Chauvin was actually not doing what he was taught
and that his actions are not justifiable. This most likely will be some of the
most impactful evidence used in this trial. It will be interesting to see how
the rest of this situation plays out as the entire country is seeming to be
paying attention to it.
