Nigeria Protests: What’s Happening and Why Are People Demonstrating Against SARS?

Large-scale protests have broken out against SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) Taskforce in Nigeria and Nigerian diaspora communities globally. The Taskforce has long been accused of violent harassment, police brutality, extortion and other forms of corruption all while acting with impunity. These protests were met with police crackdowns and ant-riot tactics including Nigerian soldiers firing lives rounds at peaceful protesters in an Upscale Community named Lekki Toll Gate last Tuesday, resulting in the death of several protesters. These actions of Nigeria's government are very problematic for The United States, as the country is our largest ally in Sub-Saharan Africa and an avid customer of our arms industry. The United States has condemned the actions of the actions of the Regime, as did the African Union and most of the World's prominent democratic nations.
