Torrential rain swept away houses and roads in the French Alps, near the France-Italy border. Twenty-one people are reported missing, with an additional seven people found dead. The volume of rain in the time-span of 10 hours has never been seen in the region since records began, says the French prime minister. For reference, 500mm is equal to approx. 1.64 ft.
