In a documentary about him released on Wednesday, Pope Francis advocated for civil union laws for same-sex couples. He wants homosexuals to be protected by the law and to be welcomed into the Church family. He proposed that "they're children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it." The Pope has already proven to be progressive in his care for all people, but this is an especially major step for Catholicism. While the Pope's statements do not change any official doctrine, it opens the door to acceptance and welcome of LGBTQ+ people around the world. It is a significant step towards unity in this otherwise chaotic and divisive time.
