Spain's State of Emergency Faces Backlash

Today, October 26, the Spanish government is facing fierce backlash for its plan to impose a state of emergency for six months. Both the conservative People's Party (PP) and the center-right Ciudadanos agree that a state of emergency is necessary but not for six months. Pablo Casado, the leader of the PP, said that they would agree to the emergency order but only for eight weeks. Not only is there opposition based on party lines, but also opposition from epidemiologists who suggest that this measure is too little too late. Opposition among citizens is strong because of a fear that the Spanish government will take advantage of their power and abuse the order. With that said, the total number of cases in Spain increased by 50,000 over the weekend bringing the total to 1,098,320 with 35,031 deaths.
