Two Americans, freelance journalist and former Marine Austria Tice and a therapist Majid Kamalmaz, have been missing in Syria for years now. The former since 2012 and the ladder since 2017. There are also believed to be four more Americans held by the Syrian government but little is known about them. A deputy assistant to President Trump and top White House counterterrorism official went to Damascus earlier this year to try and secure their release. This is significant because this is the first direct contact the U.S. government has had with the Syrian regime since 2012.
