As of today, India's official coronavirus death count has passed 100,000 deaths, making it the third highest death toll behind the United States and Brazil. However, the actual death toll is very likely to be much higher than this, as some deaths--like those that occur to poor people living on the streets--might not be counted or diagnosed.
Additionally, India now has 6.4 million total cases, which is only second to the United States' 7.3 million cases. This is despite having virtually zero cases back in March and only starting to have an uptick in May. In fact, this last week India recorded twice as many new cases as the United States, which is especially concerning given their extreme population density in major cities.
While they do have a lockdown in place, critics say it was poorly planned, leading it to be ineffective. So in trying to restore the economy, India is now allowing cinemas and some schools to reopen, which could lead to an even bigger outbreak.
